Disruptive or Troubled Students

The Division of Student Development is responsible for setting and implementing policy regarding disruptive or troubled students--whether the students are on the main campus or at any of the approved program sites/locations.

Student Development has developed a comprehensive guide, "Responding to Disruptive or Inappropriate Student Behaviors: General Tips and Guidelines for University Personnel" (rev. Summer 2009) for recognizing and responding appropriately to inappropriate, disruptive, or troubling student behaviors. Faculty teaching at distance education sites are encouraged to review the manual each semester and to retain a copy with their "travel materials" as the guide contains contact information, by site, for local campus officials, law enforcement, and assistance agencies as well as instructions for when/who/how to contact on the main campus in the event that an instructor encounters a disruptive student or becomes concerned about a student's welfare.

Faculty are strongly advised to verify the class roster in the first class days as official enrollment insures that needed services and/or interventions can be made.

In the event that a student on the roster fails to attend any class or simply stops attending class, the instructor should contact the Distance Education Office at 828-262-3113. The inactivity could be a sign that a problem has developed with the student and should be addressed.

Should a faculty member become aware that a student is deceased, he/she should notify the Office of Student Development immediately.
