Textbooks

Ordering Process:

Textbook information for distance education courses is gathered from faculty during the course build process via the web-based Course Request Form. The information is then provided by the Office of Distance Education to the Campus Bookstore for the placement of orders. Should a faculty member be unsure about the textbook at the time of the course build process, he/she may enter "TBA" in the textbook field on the Course Request Form; however, he/she should supply the required information (course name and number, the name of the text, the author, the publisher and the ISBN) by email to Sara Speed at speedse@appstate.edu (in OEDE) as soon thereafter as possible. The order should be sent to Ms. Speed NO LATER than 6 weeks prior to the start of the applicable semester to ensure that the text will be available to students in time for the first class meeting.

Confirming Your Textbook Order

Specific textbook information for courses is provided only via the Appalachian Bookstore website to insure that Appalachian is in compliance with federal regulations requiring accurate and complete textbook info and that students are getting the textbook info supplied directly by the faculty member. Textbook information is NOT provided on the Course Schedule.

  1. Click on this link to the Appalachian Bookstore website
  2. In the "Purchase Textbooks" section, click on "Click here to find and puchase non-rental textbooks." Read the "Textbook Purchase Disclaimer" and click "I Agree."  You can click straight to the disclaimer page: http://bookstore.appstate.edu/textbook-purchase-disclaimer.
  3. Under the "Books" header, click on "Textbooks and Course Materials."
  4. In the drop down menu, under the "Select Your Program" header, select "Distance Education"
  5. In the "Select Your Term" drop down menu, select the correct term. Terms are 3 numberical digits and are coded in this way: first two digits are the year, last digit is the semester. For example:
    111=spring 2011 121=pring 2012 131=spring 2013
    112=1st sum 2011 122=1st sum 2012 132=1st sum 2013
    113=2nd sum 2011 123=2nd sum 2012 133=2nd sum 2013
    114=fall 2011 124=fall 2012 134=fall 2013
  6. In the "Select Your Department" drop down menu, make sure "DISTANCE EDUCATION" is selected.
  7. In the "Select Your Course"drop down menu, select your course.
  8. If there are multiple sections of the course, a "Select Your Section" drop down menu will appear.  Select your section number.

Textbook Info for Students:

Information about the student textbook ordering process is provided to students during their initial orientation. Specific textbook information is included in the extension course schedule according to what has been supplied via the Course Request Form (or by email from the faculty member), and students are asked to purchase the books before the first day of the term. Students enrolled in extension course sections may purchase their books from the campus bookstore or any other vendor. Faculty members should note that when textbook orders are placed later than 6 weeks prior to the start of the term, they cannot be assured that textbook related assignments can be completed early in the semester as the majority of extension students cannot "pick up" a book at the last minute and delivery from whatever source is used adds a minimum of 2-3 days to the receipt/availability timeline.

Please note the following:

  1. The Campus Bookstore will not place orders for extension courses/sections without written notification from the Office of Distance Education.
  2. Due to the logistics associated with rental and return the textbook rental fee is not assessed on extension course enrollments; therefore, students enrolled in distance education courses are not eligible to participate in the ASU Bookstore rental program for their extension course/s.
  3. Errors in textbook information are often very costly for extension students who order the wrong book (according to what has been posted) and subsequently may be unable to exchange it; errors can also delay, well into the semester, the receipt of the correct textbook.
  4.  Instructors who wish to order desk (instructor) copies of textbooks should contact their department office as the Distance Education Office is unable to place orders for desk/instructor copies.
